Tourist guide to Shopping for Cannabis

Not every state has made cannabis legal, but if you are traveling to an area where it is, there are a few things you should keep in mind as a tourist.

If you are visiting the Las Vegas area and are looking for weed near Vegas strip, you probably know that it is officially legal there. Although there are places to buy weed near Vegas strip, there is only one place you can use it and that is your residence. This means that as a tourist you cannot legally consume cannabis. If you are not a resident of Nevada, this also means that you cannot purchase it and take it home as it is illegal to take marijuana across state lines.

Many of us know that Colorado was the first state to make Cannabis legal. It is also one of the few places where tourist can also purchase cannabis. However, you still can’t transport cannabis across state lines because it is still federally illegal. If you purchase it here in Colorado, all you need is an ID and some cash but not too much cash. You also must consume it within the state limits and in a nonpublic setting.

You are only allowed to possess an ounce of cannabis at any given time. Any more than that and it could be assumed you have an intent to distribute illegally and will be charged federally.

You cannot use or display any cannabis products in public. It is even banned on federal lands such as national parks and military bases, so no getting high while camping in the Rocky Mountains or you could end your trip with a federal crime on your record.

Keep the cannabis in the specially marked sealed container when transporting. Just like the law for alcohol says you can’t have an open container in your vehicle, it also applies to marijuana.

Even if you are purchasing cannabis for medical treatments, many of these same laws apply. When in doubt about any of the laws for the area you are visiting, consult with law enforcement to prevent becoming victim to an unfortunate police misunderstanding.

There are a lot of proven benefits to using cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes, but as will all good things, moderation is key. Do not consume and drive, this should be a given. Do not use when operating heavy machinery. Eventually, all states will make cannabis legal, but until then, don’t ruin it for the few who already have.
